Workshops & Education

Interacting with film

We create workshops and educational programs that encourage people to make movies their own. Our programs teach participants about making sound for the movies, how to create a convincing cartoon character with your voice and how to make a monster’s footsteps come to life.  By working directly with movies and hearing their sounds played back, participants can think about film in a new light and feel empowered to create and remix media on their own.

Learning about sound effects props at the Portland Art Museum with Filmusik

Making the sound for movies is a great project for schoolgroups and teambuilding. Artists from Filmusik provide the technology and an overview of how things work, everyone learns how to read from a teleprompter and synchronize noises with the film on the big screen.  Then the fun part is when we’re rolling and can put everything together.

Every soundtrack requires a wide range of talents, it’s easy to pick up the basics, just look at what a group of kids at the Portland Art Museum put together on the first try, this is sound for the 1940′s Superman cartoons by Max Fliescher:

Be in touch with us if you’re interested in participating in or hosting a workshop with the artists of Filmusik.  We tailor workshops for most venues and groups, we’ve worked with aspiring claymation animators at Film Action Oregon’s “Animate It!” workshop and helped kids make monsters roars for the NWFilmCenter’s “Celebrating Film” museum day.  Of course at the end we all get to sit back and watch our creations with popcorn in hand, participants can walk away with a copy of their own soundtracks and an enthusiasm for getting involved in the media and art that they love.
