Dubbed into English from the original script (we couldn’t make any of this up, we swear), 6 Portland voice actors bring the characters of the film to life including jolly white-beard and Lucifer himself.   The Filmusik Chamber Ensemble performs a new score live and sound effects designer Dino De Aelfweald creates every sound in the film from bottles, whistles, shoes, doors and bells.  Somewhere between It’s a Wonderful Life and Lucha Libre, Santa vs. Satan is a holiday classic!!

Santa Claus was not widely known in Mexico in the 1950’s, which might account for the many discrepancies between Santa vs. Satan and your run-of-the-mill Christmas story:  Santa lives in space, his toys are made by a United-Nations like delegation of international children.  Robotic reindeer.  etc.  But of course director Rene Cardona was not the obvious choice for a holiday film, he is best known for directing a unique brand of Mexican wrestler movies that star Santo the masked Luche Libre hero.  Santo vs. Capulina (1969), Santo vs el Estrangulador (1966). Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964).  For all we know it may only be due to a spelling error that he ended up as the director for the 1959 holiday film Santa vs. Satan.

The Hollywood theatre is transformed into a recording soundstage as the voice actors, sound designers and musicians dub the film into English for a one time screening.  There’s caroling, dancing and fire-breathing.  it’s the new Christmas Carol!

Claymation on the big screen

Thanks to the cast and crew of The Little Prince, we had our final performance on Sunday night to a packed house and it was an honor to host director Will Vinton and the original animators and creators of both films.

It was a magical experience to hear the original voices from the film as you watch, and realize that they are acting live in the theatre.  Everyone was in top form, maybe even better than the original.  But of course, they’ve had 30 years to practice.

The performers were on top of their game. The film was unrelenting with over 30 minutes of hand-to-hand combat and starship fights that defy all logic and expectation.  Still no one seemed to believe the actors didn’t make things up. My personal favorite line of the film is still the narration at the beginning when the delegations of Earth send their “Finest 2 Turk warriors… and some other people”.

Thanks to the Electric Opera Company for the wailing guitars, The Willamette Radio workshop for a oscar-worthy read and Pat Janowski’s expert film Foley.

Fantastic pictures of the show are now on our website, click here to check them out!
