FILMUSIK: PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE

For this screening of Ed Wood’s sci-fi classic, we’re combining twirling bows and batons with twisting knobs and faders.  Local electronica artist Sugar Short Wave in collaboration with the Classical Revolution PDX String Quartet premiere a LIVE soundtrack in the pit under the flickering lights of UFOs and vampires.

Ed Wood’s timeless work of great vision and ineptitude is back to the big-screen with our restored and colorized print of the film (courtesy of Legend Films), bringing the pajama aliens, hubcap flying saucers and stock footage to a new level of uhh…  realism.

With 19 Musicians, Composers and Voice Actors in the pit, we are taking a stab at the best/worst movie ever made (and we’re going for a stake through the heart).

Live performances add polish to Ed Wood’s ‘Plan 9′

The only problem with Filmusik’s real-time reimagining of ”Plan 9 From Outer Space” is that it’s too good.

At times, as the live string quartet plays Galen Huckins’ thoughtful score and Sugar Short Wave adds keyboards and electronica while the actors of theWillamette Radio Workshop dub the actors’ lines, you find yourself engaged almost to the point of not wincing at flying saucers dangling from strings and aliens whose uniforms appear to be purple satin pajamas. Filmusik almost makes you forget that Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space” is generally regarded as one of the worst movies ever made.

And that’s a good thing…
